Frame tents meet and adapt to most event scenarios, especially those with specific environmental requirements. Frame tents are almost a perfect substitute for all other types of tents.

1. When the site cannot accommodate ground stakes

Many outdoor tent events require ground stakes for fixing, such as rope-supported tents, peaked tents, pop-up tents, and canvas tents. However, on concrete plazas, asphalt roads, or brick surfaces, ground stakes cannot be used. In this case, you can choose a frame tent instead of tents that require ground stakes.

Frame tents achieve stable fixation through their metal frame and counterweight system (commonly 200–500 kg per column), without relying on external guy ropes, like placing a lightweight structure directly on the ground.

This is why frame tents are used much more frequently than rope-supported tents in urban commercial events, parking lot events, plaza promotions, trade shows, and municipal events.

2. When a completely open and flexible interior space is needed

When you need a 100% completely open space that allows you to flexibly arrange your event space, a frame tent is also a good choice.

Frame tents have no central support columns, resulting in a complete and regular interior space, which is very intuitive in practical use.

Typically, frame tents with a span of 6–15 meters can achieve a completely column-free interior space, sufficient to meet most event needs. In practical applications, these types of tents are ideal for:

  • Weddings or banquets for 60–200 people
  • Annual meetings and product launches for small and medium-sized enterprises
  • Temporary booths, display areas, or reception spaces

Whether arranging round tables, long tables, stages, or dividing areas for registration, dining, and performances, frame tents offer greater layout flexibility. This “invisible convenience” is often only truly appreciated by organizers after the event has actually begun.

3. When the event scale is small to medium

For small to medium-sized events, while large clear-span tents offer superior performance, they are not always the optimal solution in terms of cost, transportation, and installation complexity.

From industry practice, frame tents are generally more suitable for the following scale ranges:

  • Number of attendees: 50–300 people
  • Single tent area: approximately 100–450 ㎡

Within this range, frame tents achieve a relative balance between structural strength, space utilization, and cost.

Compared to clear-span tents, they are more cost-effective, easier to transport and set up, and suitable for non-long-term or non-large-scale use.

It can be said that frame tents are not the “strongest” type of tent, but they are often one of the safest choices. In many real-world projects, they serve as a “reliable solution.”

Limitations of Frame Tents

Every product has its limitations, and frame tents are no exception. While their advantages in flexibility, setup efficiency, and site adaptability are significant, these advantages do not mean they can be infinitely scaled or used in all scenarios. A truly rational choice comes from a clear understanding of the boundaries between “can be used” and “should be used.”

In practical projects, understanding the limitations of frame tents is not to negate their value, but to avoid forcing their use in unsuitable conditions, thereby leading to unnecessary safety risks and cost waste.

Limited Span Capacity

The most comfortable and cost-effective use range for frame tents is typically within the medium span range. Under a span of 6–12 meters, their structural stability, material utilization, and construction efficiency are quite ideal. This is why most events, weddings, and commercial projects prioritize frame tents within this range. As the span approaches 12–15 meters, tents can still maintain structural safety through reinforced frames, thicker columns, and increased counterweights, but the structural complexity and cost will increase significantly. While the tent is still “usable,” it begins to deviate from its original lightweight and flexible design principles.

Once the span exceeds 15 meters, the structural efficiency of frame tents decreases rapidly. The cost incurred to meet safety requirements often approaches or even exceeds that of clear-span tents, while overall stability remains inferior. In this situation, continuing to use a frame tent is usually not a rational choice.

Limited adaptability to extreme weather conditions

Under normal weather conditions, a qualified frame tent can fully meet the needs of most activities. However, when the operating environment approaches extreme weather, the tent is subjected not only to short-term pressure but also to continuous structural stress.

When the usage time extends to 3–12 months, the tent can still be used, but only if regular inspections of structural connections, tent fabric condition, and counterweight stability are performed.

If the project cycle is measured in “years,” frame tents are more suitable as a transitional solution. Over time, material aging, weather fatigue, and regulatory compliance issues will gradually emerge.  At this point, continuing to rely on frame tents is often less safe and economical than switching to clear-span tents or lightweight steel structures.

In What Situations Are Frame Tents Not Recommended?

Considering the limitations of frame tents, there are some situations where their use is not recommended in practical applications.

  • Industrial or warehousing uses requiring extra-large spans and uninterrupted space
  • Located in areas with long-term strong winds or heavy snow, requiring extremely high structural ratings
  • Planned for use as a long-term permanent building
  • Professional scenarios with high requirements for load-bearing and lifting equipment

In these situations, choosing clear-span tents or steel structures is often safer and more economical.

How to Choose the Right Frame Tent?

If you have confirmed that a frame tent is suitable for your needs, the question is no longer “whether to use it,” but “how to choose the right one.” In actual projects, selection errors often stem not from the product itself, but from an insufficient understanding of the usage conditions.

A more reliable approach is to determine the configuration based on the intended use, rather than starting with size or price.

Clarify the usage scenario and number of people

The first step in choosing a frame tent is to specify the usage scenario, rather than staying with vague descriptions like “holding an event” or “doing a display.” Different types of events have very different space requirements.

Based on industry experience, frame tents are more suitable for small to medium-sized events accommodating 50-300 people. Within this range, they can maintain an open space without columns while avoiding structural inefficiency due to excessive span. For weddings or banquets, sufficient space is usually needed for tables, chairs, aisles, and a stage, with an average area of approximately 1.2-1.5 m² per person; for standing events or displays, the average area per person can be appropriately reduced.

After determining the number of people, calculating the required tent area is often more reliable than simply choosing a size that “looks big enough,” and is also more conducive to budget control.

Determine the fixing method and tent form based on site conditions

Site conditions are one of the key factors determining whether a frame tent is “suitable.” If the installation location is concrete, asphalt, or tiled ground, ballast weights are usually the only option for securing the tent; however, on grass, soil, or areas where stakes are permitted, ground stakes can be used in conjunction with ballast weights, thus reducing the number of weights required.

In practice, the ballast weight requirement for a single support column is typically between 200 and 500 kg, depending on the tent size and local wind load conditions. The more open the site and the more complex the wind environment, the higher the ballast weight requirement.

The shape of the site also influences the choice of tent type. If the site is long and narrow, irregular, or needs to be built adjacent to a building, a standard rectangular frame tent is often easier to install and looks neater and more aesthetically pleasing than a tensioned cable tent.

Select Based on Usage Frequency and Climate Conditions

The higher the frequency of use and the longer the usage period, the higher the requirements for the structure and materials.

In relatively mild climates and for shorter usage periods, a conventional aluminum alloy frame and 650–750 g/㎡ PVC fabric can meet most needs; however, in windy, rainy, or seasonally cold environments, it is recommended to choose a higher-specification frame structure and thicker fabric of 750–900 g/㎡ to improve wind resistance, waterproofing, and durability.

If the tent needs to be used in autumn and winter, special attention should be paid to the low-temperature resistance and snow load capacity of the fabric, and sufficient structural safety redundancy should be reserved, rather than simply pursuing lightweight design.

Considering Style, Function, and Future Usage Flexibility

While meeting safety and structural requirements, the style and functional configuration of the tent are also worth considering.

Whether the side walls are removable, whether transparent windows are needed, and whether vestibule or passage interfaces are required will directly affect the actual user experience.

In addition, if the tent may be used for different types of events in the future, modularity and expandability become particularly important. Frame tents that can be flexibly adjusted in length and repeatedly combined are often more cost-effective in the long run.
